SIBO means small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The small intestine is supposed to be scarcely populated with bacteria in comparison to the large intestine, so when there is a larger amount of bacteria in the small intestine, we have SIBO.

SIBO is not cut and dry, it can be tricky to pick apart and understand because there are several types of SIBO. The types can be delineated by the symptoms you are having or the gases produced that would be found on a breath test (the diagnostic tool to assess for SIBO).
So, where does your diet come into play? Well the bacteria have certain foods they prefer over others and when they get those foods, they produce more gases.
The tops foods that bacteria of SIBO love are fermented foods like cheeses, kombucha, and sauerkraut. They also love sugar and fiber. If you feel worse after eating these foods, you may have SIBO.
Diet is typically where we begin to treat SIBO, there are many traditional diets which include a low-FODMAP diet (another acronym), the Specific Carbohydrate diet and the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome).
